Nickel silver covers were discontinued on most Humbuckers early in the sixties due to the difficulty of polishing, plating, and expense. When brass was substituted, guitarists started removing the covers to regain the high frequencies that brass tends to mask, leading to the open coil look. Nickel covers not only give superior tone but look great too.
